What’s helping:

  • Publicly available, transparent salary listings
  • At MPOW, an official salary study using data from CUPA-HR (for faculty) and another agency for staff positions led to significant raises for some (raises for librarians, no raises for faculty in already well-paid fields like Business!)

What’s in the way:

  • No way to negotiate pay scales
  • Male co-workers who don’t share salary information
  • Pushback from managers/superiors about sharing salary information
  • Institutions that prohibit/inhibit unions
  • States with employment-at-will doctrine

Request: Can we create a feature that looks at pay rates by area and compares to cost of living to see how many librarians meet the average rate for their areas?

Just a suggestion -- you might want to move this information to an Excel sheet [a]at some point. You don’t want the table to become unwieldy and crash due to the amount of information (personal experience -- it happens!).

I would add a column for starting salary, years of service/experience in the field, faculty vs. non-faculty status, union vs. non-union

^ I agree with the above -- this is helpful in contextualizing my own pay grade with others who are at similar points in their career, especially for new librarians who don’t know how many years someone has served at Librarian I or II (+3)

[c]this should also capture years experience in the profession. $75,000 might sound like a lot for someone working in a rural library with 5 years experience, but not necessarily for someone in a large city with 30+ years experience.

[d]State salaries seem to be available to search. Use the list of library employees to search these state salary databases to find out individual salaries which should help inform salary negotiations.
