What do you believe?

MAPHIKO is an acronym of Malaysia, Philippines, and Korea. These three countries have a common history of colonization, dictatorship, and media blackout; which led fake news to be a tool for the social/political controls. A debate is held among candidates who are preparing to elect the leader of a new country. The audience asks questions to the candidates, and each candidate persuades that they are the optimal leader by answering those questions. As the candidates' stories gain logic and structure, the mechanism of fake news is explored through the perspective of trans-nationalism.

Fake News Research is an artist-led project navigating the truth underneath the stories, the mechanisms behind the media, broadcasting, and the invisible hands on our society. From the common interests in the role of arts in our society, artists from different countries have been working together on this project since 2020, and dealing with multiple aspects of fake news with their theatrical voices.

Synopsis

A presidential election for newly united country, MAPHIKO! MAPHIKO, an unexpected yet beautiful enough heterotopia in your imagination.

Candidates with their own party and premises step forward and stand in front of the people after finishing their speeches. Their stories, full of irony but sincere at the same time, may persuade people more passionately than the truth itself. The audience throws sharp questions. It is representing the role of the public square - a public space for debating, discussing and discovering - as a heterotopia.

Stories that someone has always wanted to tell once boldly take the stage, and the audience faces not only the stage but also each other, seeing how they are reacting to the narratives. And then, the show goes for voting. The results of the vote encompass aspects that closely resemble reality and also things that would be impossible anywhere else at the same time. Under the safe promise that everything is fake, everyone suddenly reveals truth of our world.

In Suwon, even though one of the Filipino artists Bunny was not able to join the team physically, she vividly took the stage with an helper holding her face and representing her body. (This helper had been holding an iPad screen with Bunny’s face and voices during the whole show.) The voice of her who exists but does not really exist was perhaps the most realistic.

It is not researching politics, but rather performing politics. It is a forum theater as well as a reality show made possible through the participation from the public space. We all immersed ourselves in our respective roles without knowing the ending. Following intense conversations that kept us on edge, we elected the president of MAPHIKO. The diverse stories and arguments of various existences mingled under the sunny sky, becoming a rainbow that we could not have learned from books.
