How does a Foundation Apprenticeship work?
There are five simple steps of a Foundation Apprenticeship.
- Choose the Foundation Apprenticeship you'd like, as part of your senior-phase subject choices
- Spend time with a learning provider
- Work on industry projects supported by employers
- Get assessed on the work-based learning you do
- By completing the Foundation Apprenticeship you will achieve a qualification and develop skills that employers want

I want to go to college or university to study. Do colleges and universities accept Foundation Apprenticeships?
Yes! Foundation Apprenticeships are recognised by all universities and colleges across Scotland.
I’ve also heard about Modern Apprenticeships. Can a Foundation Apprenticeship lead to a Modern Apprenticeship?
Absolutely! A Foundation Apprenticeship can provide a direct pathway into a Modern Apprenticeship if it’s in the same subject.
Also, if you choose a Foundation Apprenticeship, you will complete a number of modules during the course and you will be ahead of the game when it comes to your Modern Apprenticeship.
If your Foundation Apprenticeship didn’t lead directly to a Modern Apprenticeship, a Foundation Apprenticeship definitely supports and boosts your application for a Modern Apprenticeship because it shows that you understand and are capable carrying out the work that you will do.
