NIH Assisted Referral Tool (ART)

Did you know there’s a tool to help you find relevant study sections for your grant application? The Assisted Referral Tool (ART) was developed by the NIH Center for Scientific Review (CSR) to recommend potentially appropriate study sections using text from your application. Using these recommendations, you then have the opportunity to suggest the study section for the first level of scientific review of your application in the PHS Assignment Request form. In his blog post titled “Encouraging Use of the PHS Assignment Request Form in Applications,” the NIH Office of Extramural Research Director Dr. Mike Lauer discusses the PHS form, ART, and important related topics.

Here are a couple of tips for using ART:

  • Enter your application title – it’s optional but highly recommended for stronger results.
  • Enter both Abstract and Specific Aims sections – in general, an abundance of text improves performance.

And here are a couple of other important points:

  • Requests cannot be guaranteed.
  • Do not contact current members of a study section to which your application is or might be assigned and please do not suggest reviewers.
Contact information for the SRO responsible for each study section can be found on the study section description pages. You are welcome to contact SROs to inquire about the fit of your proposal with the study section.

Congrats to...

Valentin Kliebe, former SC INBRE student from Presbyterian College, on receiving an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. The NCAA awards up to 126 postgraduate scholarships annually. The one-time non-renewable scholarships are awarded three times a year. Each sports season, there are 21 scholarships available for men and 21 for women. While at PC, Valentin was goal keeper on the soccer team. He is now in a PhD program at MUSC.

Meet Linnea Freeman
2022 BIPP Recipient
Furman University, Biology

PROJECT TITLE: Fecal microbiome evaluation in a mouse model of autism

PROJECT INFORMATION: This BIPP-funded project builds on a previous project funded by an NSF EPSCoR Stimulus Research Program (SRP) grant. The NSF EPSCoR SRP grant brought together researchers from across the state of South Carolina to investigate the biological underpinnings of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), with a focus on metabolic dysfunction. Our laboratory utilized a valproic acid mouse model of ASD and applied a metabolic intervention, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD), to increase mitochondrial energy production. We measured sociability and anxiety behavior and we are continuing to analyze cellular effects in the brain. To build on these experiments as well as another interest in the laboratory, we will analyze the fecal microbiome of male and female mice from the ASD study in order to determine if there are sex differences, effects from the valproic acid model of autism, and/or effects from the metabolic intervention on fecal microbiome composition and diversity. We expect decreased fecal microbiome diversity in the ASD model and at least a partial rescue in the NAD-treated mice.

POTENTIAL OUTCOMES: We plan to publish the results of this project, including the completed behavioral data as well as results from this fecal microbiome investigation.

HOW INBRE FUNDING WILL HELP ACCOMPLISH: This fecal microbiome investigation is made possible thanks to the BIPP funding.

OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM/LAB: I love to cook and bake, and I get inspiration from watching cooking shows and reading cookbooks. I also love to hike.

ABRCMS ePoster Spring Symposium

The Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Scientists (ABRCMS) invites high school, community college, and first-year undergrad students to apply for this unique opportunity to enhance their scientific skills by sharing their research.

The ABRCMS ePoster Spring Symposium for Emerging Scientists is an opportunity for future scientists to join the ABRCMS community and submit abstracts in one of the 12 ABRCMS disciplines. The top presentations from each of the 12 ABRCMS scientific disciplines will present their research live to a virtual audience at the ABRCMS ePoster Spring Symposium for Emerging Researchers on April 28 and 29. Student presenters from each discipline will be awarded prizes.

This symposium is free and open to all who would like to attend. Submit abstracts by March 15. Volunteer as an Abstract Reviewer or Judge by March 8.

Sigma Xi Grants in Aid of Research

Since 1922, Sigma Xi has extended the hand of companionship to more than 30,000 young researchers through the Grants in Aid of Research (GIAR) Program. Sigma Xi grants are often the first research support an undergrad or grad student may receive.

The program awards grants of up to $1,000 to students from all areas of the sciences and engineering. Designated funds from the National Academy of Sciences allow for grants of up to $5,000 for astronomy research and $2,500 for vision related research. Apply by March 15. More

Poster & Pitch Talk Submissions
Now Open for NIH Maternal Health Workshop

Join the NIH May 8-9 for the Innovative Approaches to Improve Maternal Health workshop. Sponsored by the NIH Implementing a Maternal health and PRegnancy Outcomes Vision for Everyone (IMPROVE) initiative and six NIH institutes and centers, this free hybrid research event aims to connect the maternal health community with small businesses that are developing novel approaches and devices to improve maternal health.

Attendees can take part in panel discussions, network with colleagues, view posters highlighting new research, and watch small business entrepreneurs pitch their innovations to a panel of private equity, NIH, and health accelerator experts.

To present a poster or have your innovation considered for the pitch talk session, send an abstract by March 26. Register by April 24 to take part in person or by May 5 to take part virtually. Learn more and view the agenda

Institutional Responsibilities for NIH Applications and Awards Webinar, March 30, 4 pm EST. Is your institution interested in building or enhancing research capacity? We invite you and your colleagues to join us for our next webinar training session, where we'll discuss best practices for setting up an institutional structure to apply for and receive NIH grants. 60-min, plus live Q&A. This webinar training will provide a basic overview of institutional responsibilities, eligibility, and readiness in applying for and receiving federal awards. Having a structure in place before receiving funding will ensure a positive and productive award cycle.

Mentoring Course Available from the National Research Mentoring Network: Mentoring Undergraduate Students

This self-directed course is designed to help faculty members, postdoctoral fellows, or graduate students optimize their mentoring relationships with undergraduate mentees. The course predominantly addresses research mentoring that occurs within biomedical, behavioral, and social science fields. However, many of the principles and approaches covered in this course are applicable to other disciplines and other types of mentoring relationships. The course is divided into a series of self-paced modules. More

What’s in a name? A Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) by any other name would sound as sweet.

NIH advertises available grant support through funding opportunities that provide information on the award, who is eligible to apply, the evaluation criteria for selection of an awardee, required components of an application, and how to submit an application.

In an effort to standardize terminology across the government, NIH is joining other federal agencies in using the term Notices of Funding Opportunities (NOFOs) rather than Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs). You will see both terms in use while NIH works to update their websites and resources.
