Inviting Comments and Suggestions on the Development
of a Prize Competition for Institutional
Excellence in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility

The NIH is currently seeking suggestions and guidance on the development and implementation of a prize competition to reward and promote inclusive excellence. This outreach, led by the Chief Officer for Scientific Workforce Diversity team, is an outcome of the NIH UNITE initiative, which was established to identify and address structural racism within the NIH-supported and greater scientific community.

The potential prize would recognize institutions of higher education that have implemented successful, innovative interventions for enhancing faculty and student diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA). All responses must be received by July 28

The primary goal in establishing a prize competition is to acknowledge and reward the transformative interventions developed by institutions to create research environments that promote and value DEIA. A secondary objective is to identify and highlight evidence-based best practices proven to create more inclusive environments for students and faculty.

In last week’s newsletter, KY INBRE proudly announced the awarding of over $1,000,000 in funds for biomedical research distributed across the Commonwealth to 28 grant award recipients at six institutions of higher education. This announcement and more are on the Outcomes page on our website (bear with is as we are rebuilding this section of the website!).

KY INBRE Summer Undergrad Research Program 2022

Starting this week, we will begin a new weekly series introducing you to the members of the 2022 SURP cohort and will catch up with them during their summer experience. Each of the profiles is posted on our website in the Student section.

Meet Alex Firmin
Home institution: Spalding University

Year: Rising Sophomore

Research Site: University of Kentucky

What will I be researching: This summer I will be researching the embryos of zebrafish (very excited!)

Future goals: I am a first-generation student and I come from a Haitian background – both of my parents are from Haiti. In the future, I hope to become a dermatologist and bring more awareness for African American skin. I hope to also do more research on darker skin tones and the many skin conditions that go undiagnosed due to our deep pigment.
Dr. Melissa Mefford’s research students presented four posters at Morehead State University’s Celebration of Student Scholarship, and all four presentations were recognized with awards! The Celebration of Student Scholarship shares and spotlights the outstanding work of students involved in research, scholarship, creative work and performance arts to the campus community. The day-long event consists of student presentations, exhibitions and performances. More

Merit poster presentation certificates were awarded to:
  • Chisom Iloegbunam, “The Never Ending Story:” Circularizing Ch. Viii In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae
  • Madison Frazier and Keenan Conley, Novel Gain Of Function Mutations In The Telomerase RNA Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae

Exceptional merit poster presentation certificates were awarded to:
  • Duncan McGinnis, Creating The First Genetically Engineered Eukaryote With Circular Chromosomes
  • Mackenzie Neal and Hailey Rietz, Telomerase Activity Enhancement In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae

OmicsLogic is an online training program that helps you discover biology using data science by incorporating data-driven concepts into biological projects.

Biology as a Data Science
OmicsLogic is a program that embeds data-driven concepts into biological projects, spanning the student learning journey from observer to participant in research. This journey begins with identifying an interesting biological research problem or question that can be answered with data, continues with the collection and organization of data, and concludes with students interpreting and drawing conclusions about the data. Register for free
