The National Association of IDeA Principal Investigators is offering OmicsLogic Online Summer Training Programs, which are designed to address the pressing needs of students, faculty, and researchers to deal with growing amounts of high throughput data generated in life sciences. With a focus on accessibility, hands-on practice, and project-driven learning, these modules will help you get started and grow in your skills in bioinformatics, R and Python coding, as well as the application of data science in research and biotechnology.

KY INBRE Summer Undergrad Research Program 2022
Starting this week, we will begin a new weekly series introducing you to the members of the 2022 SURP cohort and will catch up with them during their summer experience. Each of the profiles is posted on our website in the Student section.

What will I be researching: This summer I will be researching the neurons involved in transmitting visual information and initiating subsequent motor responses.

Duncan McGinnis, senior at Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics (a dual-credit academy for academically exceptional Kentucky students), has been named a National Merit finalist. Duncan was one of 15,000 finalists in the National Merit Scholar Program and one of 7,500 chosen to receive the $2,500 scholarship. Winners are selected based on their academic record, information about the school’s curriculum and grading system, PSAT/NMSQT Selection Index score, the high school official’s written recommendation, information about the student’s activities and leadership, and the finalists’ essays.
Duncan is a research student in Dr. Melissa Mefford’s lab at Morehead State University.

2022 KY INBRE CUREs Award recipients, Drs. Natalie Christian and Rachel Pigg, University of Louisville, have received UofL 2022 TILL Teaching Innovation Awards. This annual award honors the UofL’s outstanding faculty who demonstrate a commitment to student engagement and learning through their work on one or more innovative teaching practices. The award winners will be recognized for their achievements in teaching innovation at an upcoming reception, will receive a $1,000 cash award and be invited to share their work in a dedicated session at the 2023 Celebration of Teaching and Learning. New publication for the EM Core
Dr. Chi Li and team published, “Isolation of Exosome-Enriched Extracellular Vesicles Carrying Granulocyte-Macrophage Colony-Stimulating Factor from Embryonic Stem Cells” in the Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE). DATA National Service Scholar Program: Data Scientists Advancing Biomedical Research
The NIH Data and Technology Advancement (DATA) National Service Scholar Program is seeking experienced data and computer scientists and engineers to tackle challenging biomedical data problems with the potential for substantial public health impact. This one- to two-year position will begin remotely but may transition onsite at a later date. Applicants should have an MD, PhD or equivalent doctoral degree and have advanced experience in data science or related fields. Apply by May 27. More
17th Annual NIH Pain Consortium Symposium on Advances in Pain Research, June 1-2
The virtual symposium: “Pain Management Through the Lens of Whole Person Health,” will address the application of a “whole person” lens to pain conditions along the spectrum of translational science, from the biological basis to multicomponent interventions and treatment that will ultimately improve patient outcomes and pain management. Topics will include the consideration of pain conditions and models through the lens of whole person health, integrating data science and multi-modal approaches into analyses and treatments, and methods for engaging patients and other stakeholders in the whole person approach to pain management.
