NGS ’23

The Essentials of Next Generation Sequencing Workshop, NGS ’23, offers an intro to applied bioinformatics. No prior experience in NGS is required. Workshop sessions will be held on the UK and UofL campuses from 9 am to 5 pm from June 20-23. Individuals at institutions >50 miles from Lexington or Louisville will be able to attend remotely. Participation is free to individuals at Kentucky institutions and other IDeA states

EM Summer Workshop

KY INBRE’s Electron Microscopy (EM) Core will be presenting our annual free one-day statewide Electron Microscopy Workshop on Aug 3. This one-day hybrid workshop will focus on electron microscopy of biomedical specimens. Learn tips and tricks, network and more! In-person Workshop will be held at the Western Kentucky University. In-person space will be limited; online workshop attendance is unlimited

Emma Brock

Home institution: Morehead State University

Year: Junior

Research Site: University of Kentucky

What will I be researching: I am going to be researching the pathways that contribute to the development of the visual system and vision. The lab specifically focuses on the embryonic development of the eyes.   

Future goals: My future goals are to become a professor and research effects of drugs on the brain and development. 

Interest/hobby: In my free time I love to read and crochet!

With a focus on accessibility, hands-on practice, and project-driven learning, these modules will help you get started and grow in your skills in bioinformatics, R and Python coding, as well as the application of data science in research and biotechnology. The IDeA National Resource for Quantitative Proteomics is now accepting voucher applications for free proteomics. The RFA requires a quote as part of the application process. ConnectUR 2023 Annual Conference, June 22-23 (Online), June 26-28 (Onsite, Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, PA)
The annual ConnectUR conference will provide an forum around undergrad research where attendees can draw on knowledge exchange, scholarship of teaching and learning, group discussion, tangible and scalable practices, and community building to expand their efforts. This conference will focus on the areas of contributions to the practice of undergrad research; structures and models for building and growing undergrad research; diversity, equity, and inclusion; advocacy and partnership/ collaboration and community; and assessment, accountability, and sustainability. Webinar on the NIGMS Sandbox: A Cloud-Based Learning Platform. June 23, 1:30 to 3:30 pm ET. Cloud computing provides access to the exponentially growing volume of biomedical research data, data analytic tools, and data storage capacity. In this webinar, you’ll learn about the NIGMS Sandbox, a cloud-based learning platform that contains 12 modules developed by NIGMS-supported investigators and Google Cloud engineers. The webinar will cover a wide array of biomedical research topics and will also include live demonstrations on how to access and run the modules. More

NIGMS Instrumentation Grant Program for Resource-Limited Institutions (RLI-S10). The RLI-S10 program aims to enhance research capacity and educational opportunities at resource-limited institutions by providing funds to purchase modern, scientific instrumentation. Applications may propose purchase of instruments that support basic, translational, clinical, or biomedically related behavioral science. The instruments may be used in formal courses for teaching purposes as well as for research projects. Apply by July 3More

Grantsmanship Bootcamp Training. July 18-19, 1 to 4 pm EST. Two-day grantsmanship training for faculty and research administrative staff leading up to the SuRE-First R16 application deadline of Sept 28th. Our presenters will focus on key elements of R-series applications and discuss strategies to help new investigators prepare a competitive application. More
