Omics Logic Research Symposium 2022

Opportunity for Students to Showcase Their Research Projects

Omics Logic Research Symposium, Aug 30-31, brings together students, researchers, faculty, and industry to discuss recent advances in Omics data and Computational Biology (Bioinformatics). Discussions will highlight challenges, opportunities, and applications – such as clinical, pharma and biotech, research, and agriculture. The Symposium will be accompanied by a poster session and competition awarding prizes and giving a stage to students, faculty, and research teams to present their work and get expert feedback. By joining, students will broaden their horizons and get an opportunity to explore collaborative projects, internships, and careers. The Symposium will also provide a forum to showcase the Omics Logic training programs, outcomes, and new developments with educational and research resources.

Deadline to submit poster abstract is Aug 16. Submission is open to all registered participants from high school, undergrad, grad, and post-grad categories, as well as for citizen science projects.

2022 KY INBRE Funding Recipients

This weekly series introduces you to the 2022 KY INBRE funding recipients. You can read the full funding announcement and learn about both present and past funding recipients on our website in the Outcomes section (Funded Research).

Meet Katrina Burch

KY INBRE Award: IDeA Award

Institution: Western Kentucky University

Department: Psychological Sciences

Project title: Investigating the spillover and crossover effects of workplace incivility on family health and behavior

About the project: I’m investigating the short and long-term effects of experiencing workplace incivility, which has been on the rise in the last few years. Workplace incivility is problematic in that it involves experiencing rude and dismissive behaviors from coworkers or supervisors that is somewhat ambiguous in nature, often leaving the employee who experiences incivility wondering why and what they must have done to bring it on. Not only does workplace incivility impact employees in and outside the workplace, but the emotional fallout from experiencing workplace incivility can also impact family members.

Intended outcomes: Through the use of intensive longitudinal research methods, we hope to refine and advance our understanding of this phenomenon which can lead to more targeted workplace intervention efforts.

How KY INBRE will help accomplish these goals: Funding from KY-INBRE has helped to tremendously, allowing the time and resources necessary to conduct this research which I am passionate about.

Outside of the classroom/lab: I foster animals for my local humane society and often have baby kittens and mama cats in my home for 6-8 weeks at a time.

Now Registering!

On Sat, Nov 5, KY INBRE will again offer an intensive FREE virtual workshop on the development of NIH R15 proposals (three years, $300,000). Faculty at nearly all institutions in Kentucky are eligible. Register by Oct 31. More

The STR Program, the Council on Undergraduate Research's Advocacy Program, is a six-month program developed as an expanded and enhanced event to replace Posters on the Hill and REU Symposium while drawing on their successes. It is meant to serve as a professional development opportunity for both faculty and mentors as well as undergraduate research students. In teams of up to three (two students and one faculty/mentor) participants will garner communication and advocacy skills to leverage the impact of their undergraduate research experience by conveying their story to stakeholder groups such as funding agencies, association partners, elected officials, future employers, community members, and beyond.
