Weekly News for
Nov 17, 2022
If you only have 3 minutes:
  • NEW Confocal Microscope and Funding available – SC INBRE’s IRF has a new microscope and we have limited funds for our researchers to use it!
  • NISBRE deadline NEXT WEEK! – NIH would like to see lots of undergrad and grad student participation (and so would we – consider this practice for our Science Symposium in February!)
  • NIH Human Subjects Research Event – Policies, Clinical Trials, Inclusion and more on Dec 6-7.
SC INBRE recently helped purchase a STELLARIS 5 LIAchroic confocal microscope for our Instrumentation Resource Facility (IRF) Core located at the USC School of Medicine in Columbia. The microscope is now available for use. You may contact Anna McNeal Harper, IRF Research Specialist [(803) 216-3825; email] for training and access.

SC INBRE has a limited amount of funding for members of our network to support using the microscope for data collection for grants/publications. Funding will be awarded on a first-request basis until no more funds are available. Faculty need to provide a brief description of the project and why the data are needed, estimated budget, student involvement, and demonstrate need for the support. Questions about applying for funding may be submitted to SC INBRE Program Director Edie Goldsmith (email) or Program Manager John Clarkson (email).

Time is running out to get your NISBRE abstracts submitted!

The 8th Biennial National IDeA Symposium of Biomedical Research Excellence (NISBRE) will be held virtually Dec 12-14.

Those that submit an abstract will be invited to create an iPoster which will be exhibited in a Gallery of Posters. This Gallery will remain active months after the end of the virtual conference and will enable the view of posters by appointment with any other interested faculty in the future. It is of particular interest to NIH to see undergrad and grad students participate with iPosters in NISBRE 2022. Submission Deadline: Nov 25, 5 pm EST.

SC INBRE faculty or student submitting a poster / presenting at NISBRE? Please let us know! We’d like to publish a list of presenters to look for in a future newsletter.

Human Subjects Research: Policies, Clinical Trials & Inclusion, Dec 6-7, 12 to 4 pm ET. What are the basic HHS and NIH policies that apply to research involving human subjects, including clinical trials? How do you prepare a research proposal for review that addresses the regulatory requirements? What are some strategies for developing realistic and scientifically acceptable inclusion plans? Answers to these questions are just a few of the valuable take-aways you’ll gain from this event. HHS and NIH experts will share policies, resources, guidance, and case studies in this informative and engaging event. More

Apply now to be an iCURE scholar. The Intramural Continuing Umbrella of Research Experiences (iCURE) program supports mentored research experiences for qualified students and scientists from diverse backgrounds in the multidisciplinary research environment of the NCI campuses in Bethesda, Rockville, and Frederick, MD. iCURE strongly encourages the participation of individuals from underrepresented populations and is aligned with NCI’s interest in diversity. Notice of Intent to Publish an FOA for MIRA (R35 - Clinical Trial Optional)

The FOA for the Maximizing Investigators’ Research Award (MIRA) for early stage investigators (ESIs) will be reissued in the spring of 2023. MIRA provides support for a research program in an ESI’s laboratory that falls within the NIGMS mission. For details, see NOT-GM-23-017

The reissued FOA will essentially be the same as the previous one, with a couple of minor changes:

— There will be two application receipt dates per year (Feb and Oct).

— Applications must include a plan for enhancing diverse perspectives, which is a new requirement for this FOA.
Apologies for our newsletter being a day late. For the first half of this week, our Communications Manager, Cyndy Buckhaults (above, second from right), attended the 27th Biennial NSF EPSCoR National Conference in Portland, ME (as did several other SC INBREans!). While at the Conference, she participated on an EOD+C panel where she gave a five-minute scicomm lesson. Want to learn more about getting started with scicomm? Cyndy’s slides can be found here or contact her!
