Creators, Creatives and Students UNITE ONLINE! Welcome to the Philippine International Comics Online Festival (PICOF)! LEARN from our Comics, Content Creator and Adaptation Seminars and Workshops ONLINE from highly acclaimed speakers in their fields, and GROW your love for FILIPINO KOMIKS in these curated classes!

CLASS FEES:
Workshops are 1,500php (student discount 1,200php) per class
Seminars are 500php (student discount 350php) per class

1. Philippine Komiks History Seminar by Ian Velasquez, Randy Valiente, and Prof. Emil Flores; (September 5, Saturday, 9AM-12NN)

Learn more about our komiks history from the eyes of these scholars who have inside information, lived to tell the tale, or studied the form for decades. Discover the 1900s-1950s with Ian Velasquez, experience the 1950s-1980s with Randy Valiente, and discuss Filipino Superheroes in present day Western Comics with Emil Flores.
These topics aren't taught inside any classroom, but you can learn all that here at PICOF!

2. Comics Cover Art Workshop with Harvey Tolibao (September 5, Saturday, 1PM-4PM)

An impactful cover is one of the most effective devices to hook readers. Learn to draw comic book covers that attract attention, and clearly convey your story to audiences with Harvey Tolibao. Harvey is an internationally acclaimed artist who worked with IDW, Marvel, and DC Comics and is Co-Founder of HMT Studios.

3. Character Design Workshop with Ian Sta. Maria (September 5, Saturday 5-8PM)

Design memorable characters in this Character Design Workshop with Ian Sta. Maria. The class covers the techniques used in ideation to creation applicable to comics, film, animation, video games and even toys! Ian Sta. Maria is the co-creator of "Skyworld," "Sixty-Six" Book1, "Kadasig" and his latest solo work, “Salamangka.” Now based in Denmark, Ian works as senior concept artist for The Lego Group's Design and Innovation team.

4. The State of Comics from Southeast Asia (September 6, Sunday 10AM-12NN)

Comics continue to entertain and inspire during these troubled times. Today the world faces health, economic and political crises. Find out how comics creators from Southeast Asia respond to these challenges in their own unique ways through technological, transmedia and transnational approaches.

Panelists:
1. Charis Loke is an illustrator based in Malaysia. Her work draws upon literature and Southeast Asian imagery, appearing in books, magazines, and games. She is the Illustration and Comics Editor of New Naratif.

2. Budjette Tan (Philippines) is a Filipino writer best known for writing the horror/crime komiks series Trese, co-creating it with artist Kajo Baldisimo. Trese is currently being adapted into a TV series by Netflix.
3. Weiman Kow is a Singaporean storyteller interested in tech that enables social & healthcare changes. Founder of Comics for Good, an initiative that creates and translates infocomics about Covid-19. https://www.comicsforgood.com/
4. Ariel Ries is originally from Indonesia, Ariel Ries is a popular webcomic artist currently based in Melbourne, Australia after studying animation in Denmark. Witchy is set in a SEA fantasy world with SEA characters. In 2015, Witchy was nominated for an Ignatz award in the Outstanding Online Comic category and was published by Lion Forge in 2019. https://witchycomic.com 

Moderator:
CT Lim is the country editor (Singapore) of the International Journal of Comic Art. He co-edited Liquid City Vol 2 (Image Comics, 2010) and co-founded the 24-Hour Comics Day in Singapore.

5. Comic Book Paneling Workshop with Kajo Baldisimo (September 6, Sunday 1PM-4PM)

Learn how to draw your comic book, panel by panel, with Kajo Baldisimo! Take this rare opportunity to study from this Trese co-creator, and see how each panel captures the story effectively, frame by frame, moment to moment.

6. Writing for Comic Books Workshop with Budjette Tan (September 6, Sunday 5PM-8PM)

Budjette Tan teaches us how to weave imaginative stories, build worlds and give birth to memorable characters. With over decades of success, this award-winning and master storyteller will share some of his magical wisdom of creating stories from a germ of an idea.
