About this event

Sandia National Laboratories will be hosting a virtual computer science coding challenge on October 23, 2020, from 4 pm - 10 pm. The Space Blimp Coding Challenge features space mission problems that scientists at Sandia face every day. The theoretical scenario posed is:

Sandia is responsible for monitoring all “regular” blimp traffic and ensuring that these “SkyBlimps” are generally being good citizens of the sky. To this end, Sandia has fielded an orbital blimp, SpaceBlimpX, that uses an optical sensor to monitor blimp traffic. You will be tasked with writing some of the core algorithms for the Space Blimp Ground Station, which is the system that communicates with SpaceBlimpX.

This event is targeted for undergraduate and graduate students in CS/CE/EE but open to all disciplines (although prior programming experience is strongly recommended). Participants may use the programming language of their preference as long as our hosting platform, HackerRank, supports it (see here for reference). Note that this is not a cyber challenge; this challenge focuses on core algorithmic and multidisciplinary applications of computer science.

More information on signing up for the contest on HackerRank with your team, should you have one, will be provided after you register. Teams can be 1-4 people, although we heavily encourage teams of 2+ (you may also team up at the event). Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers.* Sandia technical staff will be available to assist and take resumes.

Registration is limited, so make sure to register today!

Please email wg-snl-coding-challenge@sandia.gov if you have any questions.

* Team members must be active in the contest Discord server to win prizes.

**NOTE: If you have participated in the Space Blimp challenge before, we ask that you please do not register to compete again to ensure fairness. Thank you – we appreciate your enthusiasm!
