Our history
The Values Based Policing Initiative was started by the University of Texas Police at Houston as part of our commitment to continually improve who we are and how we serve the community. The initiative kicked off in the summer of 2020 with a procedural review of existing policies and practices related to the department's hiring, training, and supervision. Since then, several changes and new initiatives have developed. The Community Partnership Council is one such initiative.
Through the council, we hope to better engage with those we are tasked with protecting. We believe that transparency and partnerships built on trust and shared purpose will be the byproduct of this collaboration.
Our goal is to strengthen the bond between UT Police and the community we serve. This collaboration provides a space where the community can engage directly with police leadership and give input on ways to improve our services, increase community engagement, and enhance community trust.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a voluntary role?
Yes. While participation in the council is unpaid, as a member you will play a vital role in bringing the needs of the community directly to UT Police leadership.
Will I have police authority?
No. The council is an auxiliary component of UT Police and its members do not have the authority of a commissioned officer.
What is the time commitment?
The CPC will convene on quarterly basis. However, you may be invited to participate in other community events throughout the year.
Who can become a member?
Membership shall be open to employees of the two institutions we serve. We intend to have a Council inclusive of all backgrounds, regardless of age, ethnicity, race, color, abilities, religion, socioeconomic status, culture, sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
How do I join?
At this time, membership is by invitation. If you wish to be considered, please fill out the CPC interest form.
