Implementing nature-based solutions to provide protective functions against (for example) soil and coastal erosion, flooding, and avalanches)

Increasing water quality and availability for different uses through wastewater reuse, and water swapping where higher water volumes are exchanged for higher quality and vice versa (e.g. farmers provided with higher volumes for agricultural use, and industry with higher quality for production)

Prioritizing sustainable green-grey water infrastructure, which mixes the conservation and restoration of nature (including natural coastal buffers such as mangroves and seagrasses) with conventional approaches (such as concrete dams and seawalls)

Improving water and land management practices at the catchment level to support sequestration (through soil organic carbon), improved soil and water quality for food production and the environment, and reduce climate impacts of fertiliser use through water and nutrient management

Modifying currently single purpose dams to provide for multiple services, such as energy production (hydro-electricity), water security, irrigation and flood mitigation

Increasing carbon capture and reducing methane emissions through restoration of degraded wetlands, especially peatlands, as well as afforestation.

Prioritizing the reduction of leaks on the water distribution networks to increase water efficiency so less energy is consumed for pumping and more water is available.

Improving water and energy efficiency by introducing water saving technologies, such as water meters, water efficient house appliances, rainwater harvesting and safe greywater reuse for other uses such as gardening

Altering irrigation regimes to reduce emissions from agricultural activities such as rice paddies

Achieving net zero wastewater plants through appropriate treatment and recuperation of biogas, and other byproducts, as well as improving the energy efficiency of water and sanitation operations and processes (e.g., pumps, generators, etc.)
