PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS : HOW TO ACHIEVE A LIGHT, SOFT, PASTEL LOOK

Ever since I picked up my first DSLR and began my photography journey, I have been drawn towards images with a light, airy style. I love pastel colours and subtle contrast. Achieving this look has required a bit of trial and error over the years, and can still prove challenging to get just right...

Getting the exposure right in camera is crucial. The "right" exposure in this case, isn't necessarily balancing your light meter to "0". To achieve the pastel look, I usually over-expose my images by a couple of stops in camera. This lifts the shadows, lessens harsh contrasts and pushes midtones and shadows into the upper midtone and highlight tonal range – the tonal range of pastels.

I often get emails from people asking how I've achieved this light, airy look in post-processing,  but the truth is, working towards this look means it really has to start in camera.  Starting out with an exposure that may be technically correct, will too dark for pastels. Rule-breaking loveliness.
