One accident - a freaking car crash.

That’s all it took to send my brother’s and my life into a tailspin with no end in sight. I was going to be something. I was going to be the best. I had the Olympics in my sights. And it all went to shit in one flash. Brayden wasn’t ready to raise a younger sister when I was thrown into his lap. He had his life and everything going for him. Thankfully, he was still drafted to his dream hockey team. The same one dad played for when we were growing up.

It took time, but I started to get better, started to open up, started skating and even dating again. I even thought I found the perfect guy for me.

Isn’t it funny how guys hit on you when they know you’re not available, but when you’re single they won’t give you the freaking time of day? I guess the game is more fun that way. And for the captain of my brother’s team, that’s exactly what I was. A hat trick is three goals in hockey. Some say three is a crowd and they might be right.

I was Gavin Hayes' unobtainable goal.

This story was a little hard for me to stay connected to. The beginning sucked me in right away & I loved where it was going. And then, it sorta derailed a bit (for me) & some of the details weren't what I wanted to read about.

What I liked
- We get 3 POV's: Myla, Gavin, & Myla's brother Brayden. Brayden's POV added a unique & interesting element to the voice of the overall story!
- Gavin & Myla together are SO sweet & fun & adorable!!
- Quirky dialogue. I SO enjoy the author's writing style in this regard!
- SEVEN!!!!! *hearts*
- The hockey was lots of fun!

What I did not like
- Where it derailed for me is reading about Brayden & Gavin's sexy times w/ random hookups. These were much too detailed, especially because the sexy times between Myla & Gavin are NOT. I'm sure there is a reasoning behind this from the author's standpoint - I just don't get it & didn't enjoy that portion.
- Brayden's voice starts out strong &, again, I really felt it added depth to the beginning of the story. But then it just stops & we don't get any more of his POV & w/ some of the things that were going on w/ him, I would have enjoyed hearing more from him.

The copy I read was an early one, so final edits & whatnot haven't been done. I'll also be purchasing a copy of the final version to see how it works out/if there are any major changes. As it is, I DEFINITELY enjoyed the overall story & look forward to more from the Otters! : )

So this is my first book by this author. This book is written in 3 people’s point of view...no idea why that would be. Myla, Gavin and her brother Brayden, not sure why it would be from his point of view too...since it’s not his book and there is really no significance for it. The book starts out that Myla was in a terrible accident with her mom, which is where Brayden meets a nurse that will be his future baby mama. But not before he is sleeping with everyone with a pulse. He’s a hockey player and Gavin is his teammate, which is how he meets Myla. Gavin’s fiance left him at the alter. Honestly, this book was all over the place for me, I had to really try and keep up because of the way it was written and I almost didn’t finish it because it just didn’t make a bit of sense for me.

There was not any “cheating” technically, but I didn’t really need to read a detailed scene with Gavin and another girl, if you say he’s a manwhore, then I believe it and have a good imagination. Their relationship was not very developed and there really wasn’t much heat. I really don’t like to give less than favorable reviews, but I do like to be honest and this is my personal opinion. There was some drama from an ex-fiance, ex-sex buddies and a date gone wrong of hers. They do get an hea if you can stick with it that long. Not sure if this was one of the authors first books, so maybe the later ones are better, no idea. And honestly, not sure I would try to find out.

I love me a good hockey based novel, so I was excited to get my hands on Hat Trick -- I may have also been swayed by the hockey hotness that is the cover... Sadly, this turned out to anything but a good hokey novel.

So I started with a sample off Amazon, and I was really impressed with story. So naturally I purchased the rest of the novel, and it was all down hill from there.

I can sum the whole book up in one word. Surface.

Everything is glossed over; time, relationships, backstory. There is little, if any, character development throughout the book. Myla is just the worst. First off, what kind of name is that? Then there's the fact that she never finds any direction with her life after the accident ruins her dream of going to the Olympics. She just latches onto Gavin, and while I can admit that he makes her happy, but after her trauma, it seems like putting a band-aid on a cut that needs stitches -- it'll work for a while, but it's not what you need in the long because you'll just be left with a big ol' mess.

Then there is whole rivalry between Brayden and Gavin. We're told that its a roll over blood feud from their fathers, but not what caused it. Then it just magically goes away at some point in one of the many time jumps that occur.

I'm not even going to touch the proposal. Just - ugh.

With everything being glossed over so quickly, we're more told how the characters are feeling, rather than being shown. I absolutely hate it when authors do this. No one like to be told how they're supposed to feel things -- especially me.

There were moments that I did enjoy, though they were few and far between, and very sort moments. A quirky comment here, a heartfelt moment there. Not nearly enough to redeem this book in my eyes though.

Hat Trick is a book that fell flat on its face and didn't come close to its potential. I would not recommend.

3 CROWNS

Hat Trick by Kristen Hope Mazzola is my first by her, and it is a quick and enjoyable read. The characters are likeable, the plot line is interesting, and the writing is good. It has all the markings of a quick and entertaining romance.

Myla and Gavin both come from dysfunctional families that plague who they are now, although they are very well adjusted adults. The two of them together have a very easy chemistry, and the affection and banter between them seems to flow freely, connecting with very little effort from either. Their chemistry between the sheets is also on point, and I found it enjoyable to read about Myla and Gavin.

The basic plot line of the story is engaging. Bad boy hockey player falls for sister of his teammate, both have family issues and other obstacles to overcome. All of these aspects of the story made me enjoy it, and the resolution to the story was sweet. But, when the story was all said and done, I wanted more. I need more development from the characters, more development between them as a couple, more conflict and challenges for the couple to face. If these areas would have been developed, Hat Trick would have easily been a 4 CROWN read for me. The bones of the story are great, the characters are wonderful, the writing is good, but I just, as a reader, need more.

Hat Trick is a quick and enjoyable read that is certainly entertaining. So if you are looking for a fast paced romance, this book may be just the trick.

Hat Trick by Kristen Hope Mazzola was a first for me from this author. I was one happy girl to finally find her. Loved the story although it did take some time to fall completely into the characters. The story is told in three POV. At first this was strange seeing how they were Myla the main girl, Brayden her brother and then Gavin the love interest and teammate to Brayden. I quickly found out you need all POV to get the whole story.

You have Brayden and Myla who have had a rough go of things losing their father to alcohol and then later jail but then Myla and her mother are in an accident that takes their mother and Myla’s promising future as well. Brayden is left to keep his small family together. Flash a couple of years Brayden and Gavin are on the same hockey team, not friends. They don't like each other much. Myla is teaching skating and meets Gavin. Things take off and Brayden is not too happy. So much happens and the POV come into play.

I found myself liking this book more the longer I read it. There are many lows and just as many highs. I recommend this book to anyone that likes a not so easy love story. Although I did feel a inst-love with the couple their relationship wasn't just easy. I was given an ARC for my honest opinion.

I really wanted to love this book. And there were a lot of positives about it, but overall, it fell short for me.

I really liked the idea of the plot, and a hockey romance is right up my alley. I liked the dynamics of the main characters (Myla, Gavin, and Brayden) and how they were all related.

While the idea of the plot was good, I never felt like it was developed enough. The first 40% of the book gave a decent amount of background and built up the plot; however, the remainder of the book felt really rushed. The Hero and heroine met, fell in love instantly, we had a little conflict, everything was perfect. All of that happened in the remaining 33% of the book (I generally don't mind if a book ends before 100% as long as I feel satisfied with the story). And there were many sub-plots that were touched on, but never really dealt with (and probably could have been left out).

I wouldn't count out reading other books by this author. I see a lot of good potential there, but this just didn't do it for me.

HOLY HOCKEY HOTNESS! HELLO Gavin Hayes! I must start by saying that if anyone can write a fast, fun, instalove story, it's Kristen Hope Mazzola. Her books NEVER fail to pull me in, whisk me off and leave me well and truly satisfied.

Gavin and Myla are HOT! Like ice melting HAWT! I would have loved for them to have met earlier on in the book and begin their relationship sooner because Kristen writes two characters with such an intense, sizzling connection, I felt I wanted more. I needed more.

I loved how Kristen added a depth to this story, that tugged on my heart and really ramped up my emotions. My heart broke for Myla & Brayden, but it soared from the connection they had and I'd LOVE a book about Brayden! But with heart ache comes laughter and Kristen really injected some great humour in this book!

Hat Trick is well and truly a Hat Trick of humour, heart and heat. Hat Trick is the puk in the back of the net. A true winner.

Are you looking for a fast read? A scorching hot sports romance? I mean who doesn't like a hockey player. What about a sibling bond that's unbreakable? Teammate falls for the sister? This book has all of that and more. Myla finds herself in a situation that she never could have imagined. Her life was thrown into a complete tailspin. Can she regain her love for figure skating? Will she get over feeling like a burden to her older brother, Brayden? Gavin has his own issues he has to deal with also. This was definitely a fast read and could have had more depth to the characters because I felt like they had so much potential but I loved it for a fast read to enjoy.

I'm a huge fan of Kristen's work so this was a no brainer for me to read.
This is the story of Myla, Gavin and her brother Brayden. Myra was an aspiring Olympic skier until an accident stopped her dreams in their tracks. Gavin and Branden are hockey teammates who really don't get on.
I loved the closeness between Myla and Brayden, they support and love each other unconditionally really glad there was no sibling angst or rivalry.
Brayden is a bit of a player but when he shows an interest in Myla her brother is not happy.
I really liked all the characters they we're very realistic to me it was a great story that kept me invested from start to end.

Hat Trick centers around two feuding hockey players and a sister. Hat Trick is also told from three different POV’s.

I loved each and every POV. Brayden is a fierce protector of his little sister Myla. Myla is trying to find a new path in life after a tragic car accident disrupts her previous path. Gavin is trying to make his dad (Coach) proud but is unable to. Then when the POV’s combine within each other, that’s when shit hits the fan. When Myla and Gavin meet for the first time an off the charts connection is formed and sparks fly as they do with every romance novel. But this time we have an over protective big brother that has seen Gavin’s playboy ways and wants nothing to do with Gavin and his sister hooking up.

BRING ON THE DRAMA.

My only downside was, i felt Hat Trick was a little on the short side. I would have loved this novel to have been a little longer. I was left wanting more from Brayden, Myla, and Gavin. Hat Trick is pretty fast paced also so beware if you like slow build-up novels.

Hat Trick by Kristen Hope Mazzola 3.5 of 5 Stars

Kristen Hope Mazzola is a heartwarming and fun read.  New York Otters hockey player Brayden Cox is left to raise his sister Myla, after a car accident kills their mother and injures Myla, fracturing Myla’s Olympic figure skating dreams. Otter’s captain, Gavin Hayes, doesn’t care for Branden Cox, his sister, on the other hand…This contemporary sports romance takes place in New York.  It is suitable for both new adult and adult audiences.

I enjoyed the characters.  I felt bad that Gavin was left at the altar of his wedding.  I would think that situation would turn a lot of people off of relationships.  He could be a bit of a jerk at times, but it is not surprising considering his family life and romantic past.  It would be hard to play on a team at that level that your dad coaches.  He turns out to be a good guy, with Myla’s help.

Brayden is a great guy.  He is a loving and protective big brother.  He is sweet for getting her a puppy, so she won’t be by herself when he travels.  Being a husky owner, I commend her choice of dogs.

I like Myla’s character.  After her injury, she has a difficult time moving forward.  I appreciated that Brayden gets Myla a coaching opportunity working for five-time gold medalist Simon Abramson.

I thought it was interesting that Gavin’s and Brayden’s/Myla’s dads also played on the New York Otters together.  I like how Gavin and Brayden’s relationship evolved throughout the story.  Hat Trick is an entertaining and sweet read.

I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

Hat Trick by Kristen Hope Mazzola is a hockey romance set in NYC. This story is told in three POV's: Gavin, Myla, her brother Brayden. Myla life is changed for ever from an accident at the age of 18. Brayden a professional hockey player stepped up to take care of his sister after losing their mother at a young age. Gavin, left by his fiance, at the alter a few years earlier won't let an woman close to him and treats them all like puck bunnies. This book to me felt really over edited. I felt lost at times with the story jumping over things and felt like pieces of the plot where missing. I actually looked up the title just to check and see if I missed a book or something. It's very fast paced novel that covers 3+ years of time and is very quick read, I read it in a day. Brayden would have been better as a sub-character and then to highlight his romance in a second book since he really isn't in half of this story and giving away his end plot in the epilogue of this story kind of ruined it for me if there was going to be a second book with his character . Gavin's character at the beginning is crass in his dealings with women and I didn't buy his sudden change of heart. Gavin didn't have to fight for Myla's attention or heart here or overcome his history of wrong doing's to women it seemed way to easy. Myla has a pretty traumatic experience which I feel the book glossed over and her character as a woman wouldn't have reacted like that in real life. I did enjoy these characters together I just didn't feel how it happened. 2 Stars for Hat Trick by Kristen Hope Mazzola

This review was originally posted on Cocktails and Books

I wanted to so much to fall in love with this story. Myla, Brayden and Gavin were linked by the hockey playing fathers and probably could have had a very angsty, emotional story. Instead, this one fell flat to me with an unrealistic romance and storylines that left me hanging.

Myla and Gavin's romance was almost too easy, given everything else that was happening. They hide their romance from her brother. He's mad, but that seems to slip away. Then there is the censure from Gavin's parents over their relationship, but that also seems to fall by the wayside. Given these huge obstacles, I wanted more angst and to have one or both of these be a factor in demonstrating how this couple should be together. Instead they just merrily moved on and everything was OK.

Brayden was another story. He was a hot mess. He had a lot of guilt when it came to Myla, their mother's death and unresolved anger with their father. He dealt with this by raging on the ice and turning to alcohol off the ice. This storyline had a good start, but this seemed to tie up a little too neatly for someone who had such issues.

As I said above, I wanted to love this story. But there neatly tied up storylines that felt like they should have been a lot messier bothered me a bit. I would have been ok with the ending if there was truly some suffering and redemption for these three characters before we got there.

4 star Review Hat Trick by Kristin Hope Mazzola
This was a new author to me and I have to say I have no idea why. I really enjoyed this book, although it took me a while to get my head around it being told in 3 POV’s. It is told from the point of view of Gavin and Myla, as well as Brayden (Myla’s brother) and I did get a tad confused a couple of times.
Initially I thought Gavin was a jerk and at times I thought the same thing about Brayden. Myla is still coming to terms with the tragic accident which left her dream to compete in the Olympics in ruin.
When Gavin and Myla got together their relationship was sweet and Gavin seemed very different from earlier in the book. The animosity that Gavin and Brayden share as team mates on the Otter’s Ice Hockey team was a bit distracting.
Will Myla and Gavin get their happily ever after? Or with their families keep them apart? Will Gavin be happy with the sweet and fairly innocent Myla, or will he go back to his partying ways?
I think perhaps I would have been more “satisfied” if the book had been longer as I felt that, although well written, the storylines could have been developed further and I was left with the feeling that the ending was a tad rushed.
However having said that I did enjoy the book and will look forward to reading more from Ms. Mazzola

Gavin has been made captain of the Otters Hockey team which his father is coach, and he earned it. He's worked hard through his life to get there, his father was hard on him emotionally and physically and his fiancé jilted him at the alter. So now his character tends to appear harsh and he's a bit of aa ass where women are concerned by treating them selfishly. A fellow player, Brayden: was left to look after his sister, Myla: when she and their mom were in a car accident and their mom unfortunately died. Myla has recovered well, but he would do anything to protect her. The relationship between the Otters captain Gavin and Brayden isn't good off the ice, in fact Brayden can't stand him, and when he see's a connection happening Myla and Brayden he's dislikes even more, but on the ice they work great together and they make a great team.
Will a relationship develop between Myla and Brayden? Or will he just break heart? Can Brayden trust Myla make her own decisions and choice? A well developed story with entertaining characters and some exciting sports action. A nice romance with a HEA
I highly recommend it!

This is my first time reading a story written solely by this author and I enjoyed it very much. I read this in a matter of hours. This is a 5 star story.

ARC of Hat Trick written by Kristen Hope Mazzola willingly reviewed in exchange of an honest spoiler free review.

This is quite differently written, which I like different. There are 3 POV's, one from Myla, her brother Brayden and Gavin. At first I thought it was odd but quickly learned that it was important for the journey of these characters. Myla and Brayden are all they have is each other. They go through some difficult times. Gavin likes different women every night and makes no secret of it that is until he meets Myla. Her brother is not to found of the new development.

Even if this story is not lengthy in words, because it is a short story, it's loaded with emotions, entertainment and sweetness. I devoured this story in just a few short hours because I was so engrossed in it. It is a standalone with an HEA. I recommend this story.

This review of Hat Trick by Kristen Hope Mazzola is for The Sweet Spot Sisterhood Blog. It is a sweet sports romance. If you like hockey then this one is for you. I give it 5 Stars. I'm not huge on sports romances, but I have to say I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick read and definitely one-click worthy. Also, it was my very first Kristen Hope Mazzola book and I will definitely checking out her other ones. You should too if you haven't already.

Hat Trick is the story of Myla and Gavin. Kayla was a competitive figure skater with Olympic dreams until she was in an accident. That accident also took the life of her mother along with her Olympic dream. The only family she has left is her brother, Brayden. Their estranged father is in prison. Gavin is Brayden's hockey teammate. They play for the Otters. Gavin is the Captain and his dad is the Coach. Gavin falls for his teammate's sister, Myla. Will Gavin, a notorious playboy, settle down or will he break her heart? What does Brayden think of all this?

Hat Trick by Kristen Hope Mazzola is a light sports romance with a HEA. The story of the New York Otters was enjoyable, especially for a reader who is from NY. Myla and Brayden have been through a horrible tragedy, each affecting them in a different way. Brayden tries to move forward and take his anger and grief out on the ice while Myla hides away from the sport that once brought her happiness and dreams of Olympic Games. When Brayden finally get Myla to start living again, she meets Gavin the captain of his team and a ladies man who treats women horribly. When Myla and Gavin get together it can only spell trouble, both on and off the ice.

While I wish this story was a little longer and delved a little more into the backstory of Myla and Gavin, I enjoyed it just the same.

Myla's life is turned upside down by a car accident that killed her mother and took away her chances of competing at the Olympics. She is left with her hockey playing brother to look after her. Falling for team captain is not in her plans.

There were parts of this story that I felt could have been explored more to provide a more complete read. It jumped through their story time wise quickly and it was told from Myla, Gavin and even her brother's POV. I felt as though I was dragged through the story rather than pulled into it and becoming immersed in it. I found this to be an ok read but it didn't set me alight. It was an ok way to spend a couple of hours on a rainy day.

“Hat Trick” is an compelling yet endearing instalove romance!
Sweet story that flowed quickly. Plus I'm a sucker for instalove story. So it worked for me. Loved Myla and Gavin together they. They had that spark, charm and magic. I would only say the reason it was a 3.5 was since, I’m not keen on 3 pov’s. But that is just my opinion.

I loved the idea behind this book. Play boy hockey player falls for team mate's sister.

I was disappointed though because it moves along so quickly. it has the potential to really stick but there's no depth. The dialogue becomes trite and sappy.

It was a quick read and it was fun. I wish the author had dug a little deeper. It's shallow and leaves a lot to be desired.

Anyone that knows me knows that I love Kristen Hope Mazzola's writing, and Hat Trick was no different for me. I loved the characters, the storyline, the banter and the friendships. The story itself was great, however, I did not enjoy the time gaps in the story, I felt I missed out on some major swoon worthy times. Maybe it's a sign of a second book? I guess we will see.

Do I recommend the book? Of course, the characters and storyline alone are worth the read.

Want a quick sports read? This one is for you! This had 3 of my favorite things: hot men, hockey and romance. I read it in hours. It had 3 Pov's which made it into a different read but I enjoyed it. It started out sad but ended it in a good ol HEA! This won't be my last read from Kristen and I can't wait to read her next hockey book!

The only reason I didn't give this one star is that it had potential. Everything was so rushed that I didn't connect with the characters.

This book took me forever to read, it was very boring and the last 50% was so rushed it was pointless. Hope you have a better experience if you decide to read it!
