Mighty Acts of God is a book of bible stories targeted for children age 4-10.  It was written by Starr Meade & illustrated by Tim O’Connor. Unlike many other bible story collections, this one focuses on God as the main character in each story.  Additionally, rather than following the order of the books of the bible, the stories are written in chronological order.

In the interview with the author, Ms. Meade was told that this book was supposed to be written from “a doctrinal perspective that was specifically Reformed.”  I must confess that as of late I have been very keen on learning my own faith, to the detriment of learning about others.  As such, I am not very familiar with what exactly that means but if that is your belief, this is the book for your little ones!

I have to confess that my reading of the Bible is more passive than it should be & the emphasis on God, rather than the character, led to some things I’d never considered before.   I also like how there is a section after each story called “As For Me & My House…” that includes points for further discussion.

I do wonder how well this book would hold the attention of a 4-6 year old though as the pictures are rather sparse on most pages.   Overall, though, I enjoyed the book and think it would make a lovely gift for elementary-aged children.   It’s sturdy, feels good in your hands and the paper quality is lovely.   I’m a sucker for great paper quality :).

Thanks to Crossway for providing this book for review!
