SCALE 16x TNG Playground - Volunteer Signup
Help out with The Next Generation (TNG) Playground  at the Southern California Linux Expo (http://socallinuxexpo.com) at the Pasadena Convention Center.  This is being organized by SCALE with help from the Los Angeles Public Library.

TNG Playground will be on Saturday, March 10th, from 10am to 6pm in room 211.  It is free for youth.  See flyer and SCALE website for more details:

Lan Dang from SCALE will be coordinating planning and logistics.  Vivienne Byrd from LAPL will be running the room.  Mya Stark from LA Makerspace is helping with equipment and will be running one of the activities.

Planning is done on the scale-kids mailing list and via email and Google Hangouts.

Questions can go to Lan Dang (ldang@socallinuxexpo.org), though it is preferable that discussions occur on the scale-kids mailing list, when possible.

Details about TNG Playground
The goal of TNG Playground is to augment the youth program (TNG) on Saturday.

We provide a hands-on activity room for students in K-12 to get more involved in open source and STEM.

The students can come to the Playground whenever they like.  They will be given a passport and invited to complete activities at 4-5 activity pods.  They will get a stamp when they complete an activity.  If they get stamps at all pods, they can redeem their passport for a prize from the swag table.

Each activity pod should have a self-guided activity and be able to support 4 to 8 students.

Planned pods
-- Learn to Install GNU/Linux (Kenneth Wyrick)
  -- LED flowers  (Vivienne Byrd/LAPL)
  -- Scratch (Mya Stark/LA Makerspace)
-- How to Make an App /JavaScript (Pierre Armani)

Pods have been finalized, but feel free to share ideas for next year here:

Where we need help
Before the conference (now)
 -- determine the activity pods
-- determine the leads who will provide the activities and setup instructions for the pods
-- determine what materials or equipment we need to acquire
 -- publicize the event
 -- line up volunteers

Just before the event (Friday evening, Saturday @ 8:30am)
-- we need to set up the room layout and possibly signage
-- in the morning, we have to make sure all the pods are setup
-- print all the necessary materials and signs
-- orientation for the first set of volunteers

End of event (Saturday evening @ 6pm)
-- we need to clean up

During the event, the main tasks are:
-- Pod leaders - set up the pods and explain to the pod volunteers what to do, troubleshoot issues with pod activities
-- Greeters - tell everyone coming in what to expect and give them a passport
-- Prize-getters - manage the kids who have completed their passport and offer them a prize
-- Pod volunteers - sign up to help with one or more pods.  Assign students to a workstation within the pod and provide them with an appropriate activity.  Stamp their passport when they complete their activity.
  - Runners - who might be sent out of the room to fetch supplies or fetch help
