Greyford High #1

The Penalty Box

Rate this book
Liam Ward just got the starter position on the hockey team and he’s determined to have the best year of his life. If only his teammates would stop pointing out how “grown-up” his best friend has become and putting thoughts he most definitely shouldn’t think about in his head.

Evie Clark wasn’t supposed to fall in love with her best friend, but she did. She doesn’t know when or how it happened, only that one day being close to him brought butterflies to her belly and her heart would start racing every time he was near. If only the feeling were mutual.

Just when Evie thinks there might be hope for the two of them, she sees Liam flirting with another girl. To put a stop to her feelings before it’s too late, Evie will do anything, even go out with a football quarterback.

She might have put him in the penalty box, but the moment the timer buzzes, this hockey player is determined to win the game.

The Penalty Box is a complete standalone, sweet YA sports romance novella taking place in the world of Greyford High.

Sweet High School Romance!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: ❤️💙💜🖤
Heat/Steam: 🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘
World building: 🌎🌍🌏🌎
Character development: 👤👤👤👤👤

The setting: Greyford High and the surrounding community.

The Hero: Liam – Sophomore in high school. Liam is a Hockey player and is popular. He always makes time for his best friend Evie. He waits for her to walk with him and sit at his table for lunch, he drives her to school each morning. But he never thought of her as anything but his best friend until some of the guys started commenting on how cute she is.

The heroine: Evie – Sophomore in high school, she is a mix of a tomboy and a girly girl. She likes action movies rather than chick flicks, hanging out with her best friend Liam, and watching his hockey games. She also likes wearing short skirts, tight tops and a bit of makeup. Her heart flutters when Liam is near.

The Love Story: Liam and Evie are next door neighbors, their Mom’s are best friends and they have been hanging out together since they could crawl. They are best friends, but Evie starts to feel something for Liam and is afraid it will ruin their lifelong friendship since Liam doesn’t feel the same way.

This was your standard high school romance. There were popular athletic boys, the studious girl who is just coming in to her own and hot senior girls who usually win out in the love department. There are sports events and high school parties as well. Evie is not only worried about losing her best friend because of her feelings for him, she is suffering from doubts and fears that he will be with someone else.

Evie decides to try to put her feelings behind her by going out with the football player that has been asking her out for a while. She had been turning him down because of her feelings for Liam, but she changes her tune after seeing Liam flirting with a popular senior girl. I like the situations and the feelings and the fact that Liam is so kind to Evie. It was a good short read, though I tend to like steamier fare!

I voluntarily read & reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Before I get into my review, I will mention a couple trigger warnings for this novella. The trigger warnings are for assault and consent.

Now, on to the review.

I have a really hard time with novellas, both in reading and reviewing them. Typically, I always want more in a novella and as much as this story was neatly tied up....I still had that same feeling.

This novel executed the trope of best friends to lovers perfectly. It was charming and realistic for characters in high school that have grown up together. I couldn't help but wish for a full sized novel for this couple because the chemistry and charm was so well done.

It was a cute, sweet, and charming story of best friends that are struggling with the desire to become more. It's a quick entertaining read that has no problem making the reader swoon.

***Thank you to the author Anna B. Doe for sending me an e-ARC of this novella to read and review***

“Y-You ca-came…” I say, a soft hiccup making me stutter.
“Of course I came.” His soft fingers push a runaway strand of hair behind my ear. “You’re my best friend.”

Did I said how much I love books with matching names? #Livie

The love story of Liam and Evie is very short, and left me totally wanting more.

Evie and Liam have been friends since forever. He's always been protective of her. She's been in love with him for quite some time.
It turns out that they are now young adults, and while he becomes a star on the hockey team at Greyford High, the other boys start to notice how Evie is becoming incredible, and that is upsetting Liam.

When Evie notices that Liam doesn't see her the way she wants, she decides to move on and try to fall in love with someone else.
And that's when he realizes that he needs to make a choice between assuming his feelings for her, or let her go.

Falling For Her Best Friend
A short and sweet friends-to-lovers romance with the hockey boy next door.

Evie and Liam have been friends their entire lives. Best friends. Now sophmores in high school, outside influences are starting to cause issues. They share almost everything, except anything to do with dating.

Evie has had more than just friends feelings for Liam for awhile. He just doesn’t seem to see her that way. So when a football player shows some interest, Evie decides it’s her chance to move on.

Now it’s up to Liam to decide whether he’s willing to let her go or if he’s going to risk it all and hold onto her forever.

It’s always a pleasure to re-visit Greyford High. This was a quick read with a good message and great characters.

The Penalty Box is a fun and sweet novella that is sure to put a smile on your face! Liam and Evie are best friends in high school, but what happens when Evie’s feelings towards Liam blossom into something more? Liam and Evie are both endearing and for such a quick read, the author does an excellent job with character development. This YA romance had me reminiscing over my own high school dating experiences and I am certain that many will be able to relate to the characters and to the storyline. The Penalty Box is a standalone novella in this author’s Greyford High series. If you’ve read the series, you will be pleased to see a few cameos from characters in the previous books. If you have enjoyed this author’s other works and / or love a good YA friends-to-lovers romance, then you will not want to miss out on this novella! I read an early complimentary version of this book.

The Penalty Box is a sweet and romantic young adult novella. It was adorably cute and I loved this couple. I liked it a lot and just needed something easy to read right now. Easie and Liam are best friends from the childhood and they fall in love with each other. But they don't want to confess this. The whole story is totally different from the others in Greyford High series. This one is appropriately for younger readers too. You can read it standalone, no need to read other books before.

I was kindly provided with an ARC by the author in exchange for honest review.

Evie has always been more than just a friend. So much more than I could ever put in words. She's my constant. My other half. My better half.

The Penalty Box is incredibly sweet friends-to-lovers YA sports romance novella written in dual POV that gave me the feels.

Evie's feelings for Liam have changed some time ago, and in a fear that she would ruin their friendship if she said anything to him, she kept her crush on him a secret. Liam on the other hand does not see Evie this way, that is until she starts to get noticed by other guys and that does not sit well with him. It is not exactly a cakewalk, instead the couple has some struggles to get through before they get their happily ever after. But it's the hard that makes it great! If it was easy, the reward wouldn't be as sweet.

I liked both Evie and Liam, often feeling sorry for them both. I felt sorry for Evie because she was so obviously in love with Liam but he was too clueless to notice. Liam, on the hand, is so confused by his feelings that he lashes out as he does not know how else to deal with his new-found feelings towards his best friend, which almost causes him to lose Evie before he even has the chance to have her.

The Penalty Box is a complete standalone in the Greyford High universe, and I would recommend reading it if you're in mood for something short and sweet and something that will completely melt your heart.

This is a super sweet but still angsty novella in the Greyford High series. It can be read as a standalone but why would you not want to read the first three. They rock.

Liam and Evie have been friends since they were kids. Their mothers are best friends and neighbors so they were always there for each other. Evie has some serious feelings for Liam but he sees her as his best friend. Until he doesn't. But will Liam admit to his feelings before Evie moves on.

Just because this is a novella doesn't mean there's less angst in it. This author is a master at making you feel the emotions of her characters. This was a fun trip back in the Greyford series. We even saw a few original characters in it. Absolutely recommend.

I can not for a fact describe how fucking amazing this book was!!! I am in love with Anna's writing. She knows exactly what a reader is looking for. This is a high school romance of two childhood friends who turn lovers!!! What else is needed; oh I forgot to mention it's a sports romance too.
And the way she describes everything and makes it easy to imagine every scene, I tell this everytime. It's so perfect.
This is a short story which has only 14 chapters. It was perfect, so amazingly perfect. Evie loved Liam so much and he took some time to realise it. I mean alot. Before he realises she realises that he never thought of her the way she thought of him, hence she moves on with a football QB only to realise they were never meant to be.
That's when Liam comes in and tells her how much he loves her. At the end they were perfect. The small clash with Habits book was oh so good.
This story is a mixture of sweet, charming, adorable, irresistible, swoon worthy and many more adjectives. You will absolutely love this book if you're a fan of childhood friends to lovers or even friends to lovers in general.
It has 14 chapters only, but the impact it had on me is immense.

“Y-You ca-came…” I say, a soft hiccup making me stutter.
“Of course I came.” His soft fingers push a runaway strand of hair behind my ear. “You’re my best friend.”
This made me ugly cry😭

Anna B Doe is taking us back to Greyford High and I am all for it!

This time it's Liam & Evie, a younger class than the original six.
These two have been not just friends for life but best friends. What happens when one of them develops more than friendly feelings for the other?
Even though it's a novella, Anna B. Doe brings the emotions, the pull, the heat and everything else I'm used to getting in her full-length novels. Her writing makes it so easy to get lost in her stories.
I only hope she gives us more from this younger class because there are more stories waiting to be told.

Bentornati nel mondo della Greyford High School!!! 🥰
Stesso posto, nuovi personaggi!

The Penalty Box Arc Review
If you’ve read the first three books in the Greyford High series and are wanting more this short sweet novella will leave you feeling a little more satisfied. I absolutely loved Liam and Evie. This story was a fast charming little read.

Liam and Evie may be best friends but over the years things have changed especially for Evie. Liam just seems to be a little late in noticing... which soon lands him in the penalty box. Can Liam redeem himself and get the girl?
This novella is a standalone in the Greyford High series and a best friends to lovers YA sports romance. Anna B. Doe has once again left me happy and longing to read what ever comes next. 💛

I received this arc in exchange for an honest review.

This is definitely a novella but the characters needed more time to convince me that they actually had a strong pull towards each other all them years ago, because I didn't feel the need for them to be together. I thought the storyline was super easy and cute to read but I wasn't overly invested in from start to finish. It would have made more sense for this to be a full length novel to give the characters more of a developed back story and allow for the build-up to their new romance. I would have loved some different twist and turns but it was quite predictable with where the characters were going in the book.

How Anna B. doe managed to fit so much angst into a novella is a mystery but this book had me ready to toss my kindle at times. I loved the friendship Liam and Evie shared. I throughly enjoyed the memories but also the confusion they were experiencing as their relationship changed. From the first page I had a silly grin on my face because of their sweet shared past. However, I also got so frustrated with them both. But it was a good frustration, if that even makes sense?! Either way this super easy, awesome read is a to great addition to the Greyford High Series.

Evie and Liam are so cute. This friends to lovers novella by Anna B. die is a short but sweet read. I enjoyed reading about Liam’s Eureka moment when he finally realizes that his best friend and the Girl next door is more than just that. And of course, the angst that comes with finding out about those feelings is always fun to read about. If you enjoyed the author’s Greyford High Serirs then I recommend this novella.

Sweet, delightful, endearing, charming, irresistible, adorable, captivating, and enchanting are just a few words I would use to describe this incredible novella of the Lines series. I love best friends to lover’s trope. My husband and I are high school sweethearts that were best friends first. The questions that go through your mind of not wanting to admit your feelings, not wanting to ruin your friendship, and getting jealous when anyone even looks at your best friend are perfectly portrayed in Evie and Liam’s interactions. They are both such down-to-earth characters that you can’t help but root for them from the beginning. This was a heart-warming story of two teenagers finding their forever in each other.
