The non-aligned movement divided the world into two superpowers.  Some nations joined the two opposing superpowers and military groups (US and Russia) and some did not, meaning that non-aligned and non-aligned nations in the world and their foreign policy is known as 'non-aligned' policy.  Neutral nations co-operate without joining the ideology of one of the world's two superpowers;  But Sarvagi wanted to develop with his own existence.  The policy of non-alignment was strongly supported by the Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru, the President of Indonesia Sukarno, the President of Egypt Colonel Nasser and the President of Yugoslavia Marshall Tito.  At the end of the deliberations, a conference of neutral nations was held in Baldung, Indonesia (1955).  The conference was attended by representatives from 23 countries in Asia and 6 in Africa.  The Council declared the goal of enhancing cultural and economic cooperation among the poorest countries of the world and opposing imperialism.  The conference determined the framework and future course of action for the organization of neutral countries.  In 1961, a conference in Belgrade formally established the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

Under the leadership of the first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India adopted a non-aligned foreign policy.  Provided valuable leadership to the non-aligned movement.  Nehru believed that neutrality could better protect national interests rather than joining any power group or military group.  India has come to believe that the split in military alliances between the world's two rival powers is a threat to world peace and detrimental to international co-operation.  Today most countries in the world are members of the non-aligned group.  The 13th Summit was held in Kuala Lumpur (2003).  Many events have taken place worldwide in the last four decades.  Russia's dominance has waned since the dissolution of the Soviet Union.  America is becoming stronger as the only superpower.  Of course, the imperialist policy of the countries of the world has waned.  In these circumstances the influence of the non-aligned group is growing.  Neutral nations have succeeded in making a proper contribution to world politics by adopting a new approach to non-alignment.  Non-alignment has succeeded in establishing a moral influence to maintain peace everywhere in the world, to prevent war, to maintain the spirit of human society and the nation, and to cultivate the tendency to disarm superpowers.

India's contribution to the international arena Since independence, India has made significant contributions to the international arena.  India has always supported the movement against imperialism, colonialism, black-white apartheid etc. in the world.  At the behest of the United Nations, India sent medicine and medical teams for the medical treatment of soldiers wounded in the Korean War.  During the crises in Gaza, Cyprus, Congo, Sri Lanka, etc., India sent its troops to the United Nations peacekeeping forces and took active part in establishing peace in those countries.  India has actively supported all efforts to maintain international peace and security, as well as the freedom and prosperity of people around the world.  India has expressed its desire for peace by introducing a resolution in the UN General Assembly for the complete disarmament of nuclear weapons.  India has always demanded before the United Nations that the money should be used for the socio-economic development of the world's poor and starving people by stopping the production of lethal weapons and reducing the number of troops.  Thus, world peace is the main principle of India's foreign policy.  India has made continuous efforts to establish an atmosphere of cooperation, trust and understanding between nations for world peace.  India's relations with other countries India's relations with the United States India and the United States (US) are both republics.  Despite many similarities between India and the United States, relations between India and the United States have fluctuated.  The United States did not like India's non-aligned policy after independence.
