Protesters blocked National Road 5 on Sunday in Kampong Chhnang province’s Boribor district near the border with Pursat province for more than three hours before disbanding after the district authorities intervened.

Around 400 people gathered to raise awareness about their ongoing land dispute which is yet to be resolved. The disputed farmland is in Pursat province’s Krakor district and has been fenced off for years preventing the protesters from farming on land that they claim to own.

Kampong Chhnang provincial governor Srun Samrithy told Khmer Times yesterday that the disputed land covers a total area of more than 1,000 hectares.

He said that he wants the case finished quickly after receiving a complaint from the citizens.

“Kampong Chhnang administration has a meeting (yesterday) about this land dispute in Boribor district and we will announce the result to the public soon,” said Samrithy.

Cambodian Human Rights and Development Association (ADHOC) provincial coordinator Sam Chankea said more than 300 families are affected and have been unable to grow crops.

He said he believes that the two provincial authorities should agree to form a joint commission to resolve the land dispute.
