iGEM at Berkeley- Increasing Access to Bio Engineering

UPDATE: NEW REACH GOAL OF 4k! Thank you SO much for your outstanding support.  Within the last week, we hit our initial goal of 1k!  With that amount, we can send one student to the iGEM competition, perform one more project, or sponsor one month of student summer research.   Let's keep our momentum going and QUADRUPLE our funds! Help us hit 4k, so we can have twice the impact for our students.   Please continue to share out campaign via https://bit.ly/igemcrowdfunding, or reshare any of our social media content! Because of your help, we can help students from ANY year, ANY major, and ANY background to become leaders in bioengineering.  Change the life of a student today!  DONATE NOW!

iGEM is an international competition for students to showcase unique and impactful synthetic biology projects. Despite being a top school, Berkeley does not have an iGEM team, but we are going to change that. We are assembling a diverse team of determined students to design and build biotechnological solutions to real world environmental, medical, and technological problems.

iGEM@Berkeley provides students the unique opportunity to perform original, student-led genetic engineering  projects in a one-of-a-kind undergraduate-led research space. iGEM projects tend to be wildly innovative- they represent an opportunity for students to test their own novel and creative ideas. Past iGEM projects include engineering crops to be resistant to climate change, using bacteria to produce fuel, and even developing modified viruses as potential solutions to antibiotic resistance.

By building each student’s technical skillset, ability to work as a team, and passion in synthetic biology research, iGEM at Berkeley seeks to increase accessibility of the synthetic biology community to students of all backgrounds and research experience levels at Cal.  No experience required.

Our biggest obstacle is obtaining the funds to provide materials for wetlab projects. Necessary expenses include equipment, enzymes, and custom DNA that are essential to any project. These can cost hundreds of dollars each. We have received some funding from university grants, but we still need to send individual team members to the annual iGEM competition at MIT. A small team of students represents over a thousand dollars in competition fees. Your support will allow our student-run hub to flourish.  Any student at Berkeley will be able pursue self-directed research projects, and represent UC Berkeley proudly at the 2021 iGEM competition.   Create the next generation of leaders in bioengineering by donating today.   Follow us for more content and updates!

1-1 interview/chat!

We'll design a short interview/chat to host with you on our social media platforms (and it will be posted on our website as well). We can discuss a topic of your choosing, such as the importance of role models in bioengineering education, or our favorite Cas9 fusion technologies. This is a great way for any individual from the community to engage with our club, discuss new ideas and directions, and get involved in creating better opportunities for undergraduates for many years to come.
